Where to Stay for Lake Suwa Festival Fireworks Display (Suwako-sai Kojo Hanabi Taikai) 2026

Last updated: July 12, 2026

Lake Suwa on August 15 is one of the hardest hotel tickets in Japanese fireworks. The organizers themselves state that lakeside hotels and ryokan fill from repeat guests who rebook for the following year as they check out — much of the inventory never reaches the open market at all.

Lake Suwa Festival Fireworks Display (Suwako-sai Kojo Hanabi Taikai) takes place on August 15, 2026 (Sat) — see the full festival guide for tickets, viewing spots and access.

How early do rooms go? Officially difficult: the festival's own site notes that Suwa city hotels are largely full from very early on, with last year's guests holding rebooking priority. What does reach general sale (some hotels announce a release date in spring) is typically gone the day it opens. Realistic windows for cancellations: right after release, and the last month before the festival.

Where to Stay

Kami-Suwa / lakeside (Best if you can get it)

The dream option — the venue is an 8-minute walk from Kami-Suwa Station and lakeside ryokan watch the show from their baths. Treat any availability you find as a cancellation windfall and book it immediately; the official accommodation contact is the Suwako Onsen Ryokan Association if you want to try direct.
Venue is 8–10 minutes on foot from JR Kami-Suwa Station.

Matsumoto / Okaya / Shiojiri (The realistic option)

The standard fallback, and the rail operator plans for it: after the finale, around 15 extra trains run toward Okaya and Matsumoto. Matsumoto has by far the deepest hotel stock in the region and is a worthwhile destination in its own right.
Kami-Suwa to Matsumoto about 1 hour on the Chuo Line (extra trains on the night); Okaya about 15 minutes.

Chino / Kobuchizawa / Kofu (The realistic option)

The other direction: about 14 extra trains run toward Chino and Kobuchizawa after the show. If you're heading back toward Tokyo anyway, stopping for the night in Kofu instead of pushing on is a commonly recommended play.
Kami-Suwa to Chino about 7 minutes, Kobuchizawa about 40 minutes, Kofu about 1 hour.

Can you do it as a day trip?

From Tokyo it's possible but punishing: JR East runs a one-night-only overnight special (the 'Suwako Hanabi Taikai-go') leaving Kami-Suwa at 23:59 and reaching Shinjuku at 5:00am — the day-trip demand is that institutionalized. Note the official warning that Kami-Suwa Station restricts entry after the finale and you may not make the train you planned.
